professional oath

During my class of ethics at the University of Saint Thomas (MN, USA), I was given the assignment of writing a professional oath. At the end of my MBA, this exercise made sense to me. It is a really a great tool that permits not to forget one’s values and principles. So here is the professional oath I’ve written:

I recognize in the profession of business I have the ability to exert influence over society. With that ability comes the responsibility to act in a manner consistent with the values of my profession.

  • I will conduct my business with honesty and integrity. I will avoid any activities which could bring dishonor or embarrassment to my profession. I will act ethically in every professional interaction.
  • I will make the world a better place to live and will enjoy doing it. I will strive to increase the standard of living wherever I conduct business through employment of individuals, technological advancement, or other acceptable and legal means.
  • I will respect the fiduciary duty I owe to employees and peers and extend to them any training, education, or skills I have or the opportunity to obtain such training, education, or skills from others in order to help them be successful.
  • I will treat people with dignity, respect and compassion to foster a trusting work environment free of harassment, intimidation, and unlawful discrimination.
  • I will strive to generate a fair profit to maintain “business” as a going concern in order to secure the benefits of the profession for future generations.
  • I will exhibit the grace to accept societal change that I do not agree with as long as it does not violate the profession’s standards of ethics and integrity.
  • I will bring to the attention of the professional governance organization the activities of any professionals that may bring such dishonor or embarrassment to the profession.
  • I will exhibit the strength to oppose without reserve, changes that do violate the profession’s standards; and take initiative to correct or bring new solutions to these proposed changes.
  • I will adhere to and respect the laws that pertain to every community or country in which I conduct business that are indicated in my contract for business.
  • I will honor the global and cultural differences in every community or country in which I conduct business; regardless of religion, nationality, race, party politics or social standing. However, I will not comprise my integrity when doing business in countries where bribery and corruption are common practices.
  • I will respect the business professionals that I follow and achieve to learn from their practices and knowledge. In addition, I will advance my own personal knowledge through education and training with high standards to maintain the credibility of my profession.
  • I will learn from my mistakes.

This oath I undertake freely and practice these standards with highest regard.
